Rollers offer solutions to material handling headaches
The face of conveyor rollers for the mining and bulk handling industries is changing as new products are introduced into the market. Gone are the days when large and noisy steel rollers weighing up to 70kg have to be swapped manually when they are old or broken. HDPE Rollers, or High Density Poly Ethylene Rollers, are now used to complement steel rollers. They are much lighter and can work effectively in the most abrasive environments. HDPE Rollers are also ideal when working with products which are corrosive or acidic – even products containing sulphuric acid. Exposed steel oxidizes and rust on idlers causes premature failure and downtime.
Megaroller introduced a new “lite” roller last year which is up to 60% lighter than conventional rollers. “We are continuously investigating lighter and stronger materials,” says Jannie Kotze, CEO of Megaroller Australia. “Steel rollers are still valuable to our industry and Megaroller will be introducing a new steel roller later this year,” he says.
Conveyor rollers carry millions of tons of products such as iron ore in very harsh conditions. The longest conveyor belt in Australia is 52 km long and carries bauxite from the Worsley Bauxite Mine in Western Australia to the refinery. The longest conveyor system in the world is in Western Sahara, with a length of 98 kilometres.
Megaroller also focuses on innovative sealing solutions as rollers sometimes fail when moisture, dust and grime penetrates between the shaft and the roller body and contaminates the bearings. This is especially an issue with steel rollers. “Megaroller’s patented seal arrangement has proven to be the most efficient in the market,” says Jannie Kotze. “It consists of a back seal, a shock resisting bearing cover, an outer seal and four low friction contact lip seals. This unique arrangement is non-corrosive, has a very low friction coefficient and is highly resistant to chemicals, dust, water and wear,” he says.
In the end it boils down to performance, cost, safety and delivery time. Quality conveyor rollers increase the efficiency of conveyor systems and maximises conveyor belt longevity, thereby reducing cost. Lighter rollers are safer to use and onsite injuries are much less. The lower energy consumption to drive the conveyor belt brings additional savings. The conveyor rollers of Megaroller are manufactured in Australia and they can deliver your product within 14 working days. They manufacture belt structures on commission, based on your specifications.
